Post Comments - School Lunch for Our Kids

Hi Teresa!
I agree with you.  When I did the Public Health portion of Nutrition clinicals, my classmates and I were stunned about the food choices that schools (especially middle/high schools) had to offer. Nachos, carmel rolls, chips, and other junk food.  What's interesting is that the school definitely offered healthy choices as well (including a salad bar) with colorful fruits and vegetables, etc.  Baked chicken and fish (thankfully not fried).  But the difference is that, it was only a "choice", and next to the salad bar was all the junk food.  And what do teenagers like to eat when they have a choice?  More often than not, they like junk food (as I am sure you have seen time and time again as an RD).  I'm working on obtaining my RD through grad school right now and I can't wait to start the Public Health portion of my clinicals.  I'm living 800 miles (2 States) away from where I grew up and I have a feeling that this area is even worse in their school food habits than my home State.  Thank you for your post!!  Interesting to see and I was happy to see an RD post on here!  Take care.
Amanda
p.s.  do you think this show should have an RD on the show when they are talking about Food/Nutrition?!  Just wondering your thoughts on that since you are an RD.  We were told every single day by the Dietetics Professors that "Doctors are NOT Dieticians".  I just think it would open another positive area, especially when they talk about childhood obesity, etc.
