Migraines

Hey, this is my 1st time blogging.  I am 38 and I have had migraines for 32 yrs and they seem to get worse as I get older. I am wondering if anyone has any ideas of medications or treatments that are awesome or they know that work.  In my last migraine diary not quiet a month long I have had 25 migraines.  The Dr I see wants to do Botox and Im a little scared because I am fair skinned and am VERY senstive to items.  I have also heard about the stemi inplants I just feel like I have no where to go anymore I dont know what to do. Should I be this scared about Botox?

Have you tried acupuncture or chiropractic work?  I found acupuncture more helpful the chiropractor.  Only downfall is that both can get very expensive.  Never had botox, don't know if I'd ever use it.  I've HEARD (heresay) that it doesn't last for a long time, so you MAY need repeated treatments.  But same goes for acupuncture and chiro.  So I guess they are all similar in that way.

Melissa.

Sorry to hear about your problems with migrains. It seems like something that has plagued you for many years so I bet  you have heard it all and tried it all. I am a fellow sufferer although thankfully have not had any major migranes since my other troubles started. I have a daughter who has daily chronic  headaches and there does not seem to be much we can do, especially since she does not want to take meds or do any of "the integrated medicine" stuff.

You said you already tried the anti siezure meds. Did that include topomax, amitrypteline and the like. Are you seeing a nuerologist. If not that would be a good idea.  I am not a big fan of the meds but I know my daughter had some relief for a while when on amitrypteline until it started giving cardiac side effects like POTS. I am a firm believer in integrated wellness and really suggest trying meditation (check out health journeys on itunes). There are also great massages out there. I agree with melissaw72 who suggested acupuncture. You can also try accupressure where you use your own hands to press on key areas. I rememver something about squeezing the top of your index finger or something like that. Is it muscular. Taking a tenniss ball in a stocking and rolling your back along a wall may help.  But, don't just take what we who comment say - talk to your doctors!!! If you have not gotten anywhere with your current doctors maybe try a new doctor. Good luck.

PS - Aromatherapy is also a nice way to relax - try Lavender at night.

Actually I work as a CPHT, phar tech, and I can tell you that most doctors prescribe patients with migraines on a drug called "Maxalt." Maxalt is used to treat migraines with or without aura. An aura is a strange feeling or visual disturbance that warns you of an attack. It is not used to prevent migraines. Also, some Doctors use Vicoprofen.  That is Vicoden and Ibuprofen. This usually is only used for occasional migraines.  I would seriously ask your taking about prescribing Maxalt and see what they can do. BTW: I also suffer from long term Migraines and this is a great drug just in my personal opinion.

Also do you know the cause of these Migraines? Sometimes substances such as MSG can cause Migraines, or certain medications can cause migraines. Also if you ever broke you nose and it was realigned improperly this can cause migraines. The Lack of glasses may cause migraines. There are many different things that can cause migraines but I would consider all of these factors and talk with your doctor.

I want to thank you for all the help, but all these things I have already tried.  I have found one or two things that trigger my migraines one being  strong flower smells and strong perfumes.  The other thing is Sage, I can not have sage at all.  I have done the diet taking away food and slowly adding things back in to see if anything happens. Did the Chiropractor and the Acupuncture for quiet a few years, I have been on so many different medications its not funny.  I keep turning to my Dr every time I hear or see a new medication out.  I know at times it is grabbing for straws. I even went to the point of having lumbar puncher (sp) it took 4 Dr 6 times before they actually got any fluid. Im 38 and I had my 1st migraine when I was 6 yrs old and certain drugs like birth control make them worse, and I have been thru cancer also thinking maybe something will help.  I thank you all for your advice, I wish I could say I havent done it yet but to be honest I have been on every drug and done every test known and I just am not having any luck.  I know they have a place in TX where I can have a Stimiluter placed in but its comming down to I have to go thru the Insurance company and go their route no matter how much I try or the DR already knows it wont help. Gotta Love the  Insurance company!
