Migraine with a capital "M"

I am a 17 year Migraine sufferer. I tuned in for information on Migraine last week, expecting the show to educate the public about Migraines. In reality, just a few minutes were devoted, with a banner behind the doctors saying: MIND OVER MATTER?

"The Doctors" stated "HUGE PROBLEM”. We are spending a billion dollars a year treating migraine headache." Mentioned... "To answer your question, go to a dark place, lie down, put a cold compress on your head, if you don't have any medication specifically for that ~ caffeine can help. Correct? Any type of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory." They did mention kids getting auras and vomiting with no pain symptoms, and getting properly diagnosed which is important.

It was HUGELY disappointing. No mention of additional risk factors associated with NOT treating Migraines effectively, such as stroke, white matter lesions;  preventative vs. abortive medications; disability issues; medication overuse headaches, rebound, or what treatments and preventatives are out there.

I’m fortunate to have found support and information from Terri Robert, author of “Living Well with Migraine”, Dr. Krusz and the website at Health Central. Through the forums and articles, I have been able to improve my quality of life. I also visited the Diamond Headache Clinic in Chicago. There is nothing like someone who devotes their entire practice to an area of health and is adept at treating it.

It would be nice if “The Doctors” were to feature some Migraine experts, patients, and give the fourth most disabling health condition in the country more time. They never did explain “Mind over Matter”. But that was hugely offensive to someone who works out, does biofeedback, meditates and stays educated. It’s a neurological disease that is ongoing, even when pain is not present. I doubt you would banner Mind Over Matter? when speaking about diabetes or more humorously, erectile dysfunction!

I am a 49 year old man approaching the 24th anniversary of my first migraine. I have been on disability since 2001. I have been through the grist mill of clinics--the final diagnosis: I have migraines. I have been on virtually every category of dru out there. I was on HEAVY narcotics for years as they were the only relief I could find. Recently I started going to a new pain management specialist and he got me down to 1 narcotic (instead of 4) through the use of a Greater Occipital Nerve Block. I had had epidurals, but they didn't help much. Regular chiropractic adjustments have also helped. Each person's migraines are unique--what works for one won't help another. Just keep trying until you find something that works for you. I will keep you in my prayers.

Thank you for your kind words. I do keep looking for answers or a combination that will help me. I'm glad you have something that is working better for you, and allowing you to take less medication. That's a big win!!!

I found a new neurologist / headache specialist recently, who REALLY listens to me. He is more apt to use tried and true meds that worked for me in the past. I've never had to use narcotics fortunately, and imitrex and my preventatives give me relief for now. My problem has been the insane frequency. I'm very cautious to not overuse analgesics and things that cause rebound most of the time.

I think I'm probably over 20 years with migraines, the last 17 or 18 most difficult.

Hugs & prayers to you as well!
