My name is Kaite and I've been on the diet for a little over a month now. I suffer from RSD, MS and degenerative disc disease, but thanks to starting The 17 Day Diet, I was motivated to find a theraphy pool at the local YMCA and am now walking in the pool at least 3 times per week. It feels to good to be "active" again!!! The water acts as a great source of resistance, so in some ways it is like using weights. I am now able to pool walk for a little over 30 minutes each time, but I plan to increase this a little at a time until I get to 1 hour increments - hopefully this will allow me to walk on land without as much pain - plus I think losing weight will help with this too.
It is day 36 on The 17 Day Diet and I've lost 16 pounds so far. I went WAY OVERBOARD during the holidays and gained 7 pounds between Christmas and New Years, so overall I actually lost 23 pounds. I had a hard time on Phase 1 (since I don't like fish if it isn't shell fish, I was stuck with just eggs, egg whites, chicken & turkey every day). I'm on phase 2 now, and every other day is MUCH easier with the addition of lean beef, shell fish & some carbs - plus I've found some great recipes in the 17 Day Diet recipes blog.
I have another 50 to 60 pounds to lose, so I'll be going through the cycles a few more times before I can start phase 4. I'm really excited by my weight loss so far, and can't wait to see my progress as I get closer and closer to my final goal!

Dear Katie, I am not sure what RSD is but I also have MS and a disk in my back is calcifying; I also have arthritis in my spine and Epilepsy. I am swimming in a therapy pool (just started) and am going to swim 3 times per week. It is expensive because I have to have my son or fiance go with me and stay right next to me. We also don't have a Y near us. But I am going to keep it up. I have about 75 more pounds to go
Monica,
You may want to check and see if the therapy pool you go to has special prices for those with disabilities, or if they have any other discounts you may qualify for. Also, depending on your insurance, they may be willing to give you money back for doing these exercises at least 3 times per week (I know my husbands insurance will pay $250 per year toward a gym membership as long as he goes at least 3 times per week). I love the therapy pool at the Y - it's great just to get out of the house a few times a week - and I know it will make a huge difference in how I feel (and look) in the long run!
Katie I applaud your courage. It is great to see your progress and your determination. It would be easy to give in to your state of health, but it sounds like you are getting control back. I too have to go through the cycles numerous times. I am on week 2 of cycle 1. You give me inspiration.!!!
You are so lucky that your Y has a pool. I'm way upstate in the country & our Y is a joke. 4 treadmills a couple bikes & a bunch of outdated weigh machines all ina dreary basement! If you have a dozen people down there at once it gets really warm & stinky fast. I ended up joining a Planet Fitness to workout but I would love to be able to go to a pool. Guess i have to wait until June.
