About Me

I could write a novel about the things I have experienced (positive and negative) in my life, but for now, I am a happily married wife and mother of two beautiful boys (a one month old & 3 yr. old) as well as a 4 year-old niece I adore completely. My first born came into my life at age 43, and my second (final) at the age of 46. I am what the medical world would consider unusual since my children were born healthy at my age and weight (I am plus-sized, thank you).  Being a working mom has also made me very angry at how working moms are treated by both the employer and Society as a whole.  I am either expected to be "super-mom" or a martyr. I am neither.  We need to provide a better environment for working moms, such as affordable and quality daycare, as well as a better system of maternity leave.  Dads should also have the option of "paternity care" as well. I am also a big advocate of size-acceptance. The so-called "obesity epidemic" has caused alot of prejudice against people of size.

Doctors and Sizeism

I was very angry of the November 30th show where so-called "experts" imply that obese women should have gastric bypass surgery before having a baby.  This is the typical prejudice that most doctors have with patients who are obese or are considered obese by questionable BMI charts.  Who the hell are they to tell us not to have children until we have a dangerous invasive and (in some cases unsuccessful) surgery!  For the record, I...

Mommy is an Awesome Word

Whether you are a mother biologically, foster or adoptive mother, "mommy" is an awesome word.  For those of us who are priviledged to bring or nurture a young life, it is an awe-inspiring situation to be in.  I was taught that lesson 4 years ago when I gave birth to my first child in April, 2005.  I was one of those women who was career-driven and didn't want to be associated with a child. Quite...

What makes you think that it is vaccines helping anyone??? Do these other countries have indoor plumbing. Do the live in their own home with running water, etc.. I think being clean and the world getting better is what happened. When they started vaccines is where they screwed up! Purposely all for the love of $$$$$$. Not You!

Sorry that people were so rude on the postings.  I made a comment early on. (a positive one)  I am embarrassed to be a part of those types of responses.  To be honest, I read half of them and am now trying to get my name off the feed list.  It's not the kind of communication I want to be a part of.  I thought your statement was heartfelt, honest, and neutral.  I teach public school, and I can respect your opinion on the subjects you addressed, whether I agree or not!  I too, was of advanced maternal age and had all the tests to "know my options".  Fortunately, my daughter's condition didn't surface until later in my pregnancy and by then, the decision was made for me.  We had already fallen in love with her. In my situation, I am unbelievably happy.  I love her dearly....but that being said....I know there are limits to what one can handle, and this has been an EXTREMELY hard road to venture down.

I can also tell you, people can be very "passionate" when you have been through that type of struggle at the beginning of your child's life. (my personal experience)  I'm just sorry you had to take the brunt of their frustrations/opinions/passion.  When my daughter was diagnosed with her condition, I felt like I had to "fight" for her survival and justify her condition with everyone I came in contact with, and it took some time to stop, breathe, reflect and realize it was going to be ok.  I guess some folks just haven't gotten to that stage yet I suppose.

I'm sorry!....but I'm proud of your honesty and willingness to put yourself out there.

Hi,

I'm sorry, I don't know your first name or I would use it. I feel really badly about the people on the board slamming you for your comments. I have been around the DS community for almost 7 years and it never ceases to amaze me how "overzealous" some of them can be. Even to each other. All I can say is, please accept my apologies on behalf of all of them. They all seem to have chips on their shoulders and are mad at the world. If we let ourselves, it's very easy to develop an "us against them" mentality as parents of special needs kids. And there are those who are very outspoken naturally, so......it doesn't make it right though.

I would love to speak with you regarding Down syndrome, if you are still interested in learning more. My sons are not extraordinarily gifted and, if they had been born with 46 chromosomes, would be just very typical little boys.

I know all about being discriminated against because of size as well. I used to weigh 230 pounds. I am 5'3" so yeah, I was fat. I'm almost down to a size 12 now, from an 18/20. So please feel free to commiserate with me on that issue, too.

And don't let the more vocal members on this list get to you. Maybe if they actually read your posts all the way through instead of getting their hackles up right away, they would have understood more and not gotten so offended. I took no offense by your posts. I have pretty much heard it all by now and understand that misinformation does exist. Just like I have little experience with inter-racial dating and marriage, I'm sure you can enlighten me on that.

I'm all ears!

God Bless,

If you're jewish I'm not sure what biblical argument you can procure, but if you're christian, tell them about how paul says about the jews who said the gentiles needed to follow the law of moses and get circumcised to be christians that "I wish they'd castrate themselves." or "beware them dogs, those mutilators of the flesh." the New Testament is filled with language condemning circumcision. and even mentions restoration. (it says not to do it because it's inconsequential but it's paul's personal advice, not a command from God).
