It's freezing here...

Good morning all,  It's freezing here in SW Pennsylvania.  It is about 23 outside with the wind chill at 15.  I was wondering if anyone knows how to keep your skin from getting so dry?  My 6 yr old son's skin seems to be always dry.  We have a humidifier in his room and put lotion on him nightly.  Plus his lips and my wifes are always getting chapped.  I am just wanting to know if anyone here knows a secret to this.  Well,  I hope you all are staying warm,  we just moved back from California and this is our first winter back in Pa since 2003...it is gonna be a little while till we adjust to it again...hagd

Jeff,

Hi, I have a lot of problems with my lips being chapped, I found out I'm allergic to Lanolin, it is an oil from sheep, I'm also allergic to wool.  Anyway when I use chapstick with Lanolin in it it makes my lips worse.  It makes the skin crack and bleed, same thing with lotion that has Lanolin in it.  I've found for my lips the Neosporin LT works wonders, no Lanolin.  And it's best to apply lotion right after a bath to help "lock in" the moisture, I also use babyoil sometimes when my skin is real dry.  Try using some lotion and lip balm without Lanolin and see if it makes a difference.  Also the lotions that work the best for me have shea butter in them.  Hope that helps.  I hope you and your family is doing well!  Stay warm!

Hi all.

Our dermatologist recommended Eucerin plus. It helped my husband a lot. He had dry itcy skin/rash. Also had to use another DETERGENT. Boy was that an expensive trip to the doc!!

Jeff;

Still trying to warm up here in Utah and it's been 18yrs since I moved from Calif.

I have tried so many things for my dry skin but nothing yet has helped.

I think mine is from menopause, but I dont think you will have that problem. LOL

I might have to steal some suggestions from your blog.

Take Care you and family.

that's not bad for a cold weather, lol...  i live in canada, that's pretty colder.

well about your son dryness skin, try usining aloe lottion, do that 3times a day.. i myself work in cold weather, i do construction- masonry. i get dry skin ,face, hands/lips. with dry lips, i use blix, good brand. what kind of soap you use on your son, usually soap can dry the skin fast. the skin needs to breath, need to scrub the skin, from getting pours clogged. try using body wash, for kids. make sure you read the bottle,first... hope this works. take care..

DRINK, DRINK, DRINK!!! You have to drink just as much as you drink the rest of the year. Maybe even more, because the humity is not around you all the time. We have 2 humidifiers in our house and it is still not enough. Try emu oil lip balm and Burts BEES lip balm, good stuff!! For the cold thing. Well I wish it was 23 here. It has been below 0 for about 2 weeks now. One day it was -20. Now that is cold. 23 is when we are doing something outside!!  I am waiting for my hubby to get back home from feeding the cows and we will be going out snowmobiling. It is 12 right now.

Hi, I live in Winnipeg,Manitoba, Canada. Today were are at -50, skin will freeze less than 2 minutes. What we do here is, put tons of lotion(good creamy, thick stuff)or even vaseline on our hands and feet and sleep with socks and gloves on. It's wierd but it works when it is super cold and skin is extremely dry. For our lips we also put  some vaseline on our kids lips. It is kind of gross to put that stuff on your lips but it reallky works. Also. try not to use water that is too hot, that really dries out your skin worse. Hope this helps.

Dear Jeff and Family,  I went online and put in chapped lips and dry skin.  One sight said use vaseline or lemon juice on chapped lips.  For dry skin, apply moisturizer after bathing, avoid using drying soaps, use cream or shower gel with moisturizer built in, wear breathable clothing,  do not bathe or shower in hot water as this is drying to the skin.  The humidifier is also good.  For dry skin, get otc lotion which contains lactic acid, or lactid acid and urea.  BOL Bobbie

It was -6 here in Wisconsin this morning and got way uppp to 15. I used a cocoa butter moisturiser, right after my shower before I left today. Worked good I always hated putting lotion on "just out of the shower" but it is worth the extra time and effort. Other times of the day I use Aveeno oatmeal lotion, esp. on shins so I can rest better.Hope this helps.

P.S.   I have been turning  the shower on warmish setting then stop the water running, then do my main washing without washing along with the water at same time. I find that this helps my skin as well as my water bill.

I would recomend drinking alot of liquids and i am not talking about beer or coffee.. hehe! we all tend to forget to drink water in the winter because its not as hot out so we don't need to cool down. And The BEST thing for dy skin/lips is to take 1 part of natural bee wax melt it with 1 part of pure olive oil on a low, dont let it boil, then you can put it in a contaner to let it cool down. Apply on skin and lips. works miricals! and all natural :)

best of luck! :)
