HyperParathyroidism

Everyone knows about your thyroid, but behind your thyroid are 4 glands (also in the endocrine system) called Parathyroids. If you ever get a high calcium blood test result- this is a huge red flag. It is never normal and can cost you your life. The parathyroid glands control your bodies ability to absorb calcium. If you have had a lot of dental work done this may put you at risk since they believe the x-rays may have an effect on these glands. There may be other causes so this is just one to consider. Due to this disease that was not diagnosed for years (at least 3), I lost my teeth- they crumbled due to loss of calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, etc. I have calcification of 3 of my heart valves, it tore my stomach up going out of my body, and I got Osteoporosis. It also effected my concentration, my emotions and moods, my serum (blood) calcium levels went as high as 18 (which could result in coma and death). I finally had the correct diagnosis, and had 2 of the 4 removed due to non- cancerous tumors. The good news is once removed your bones can again regain their density, you can rebound from this disease and you may eventually regain your concentration and focus. I hope this helps someone.

I also had 2 parathyroids removed, non-cancerous tumors.  Mine was fortunately found fast and I didn't have symptoms like you did, other than the ionized calcium was high, as well as the calcium in blood work.

I know your pain! I had had hyperparathyroidism for 7 years, since I was about 14 years old. All throughout high school my doctor kept telling me I was just having stomach ulcers from stress. My symptoms would come and go for months at a time, up until I was 21. I finally went to a different doctor, and they at first thought it was my galbladder. Needless to say, after going through a battery of tests and scans, they realized that wasn't the issue. Symptoms went away for a while, and then came back worse than ever. Went back to the doctor and they did my bloodwork and found that my calcium levels were high, thought I was dehydrated, had me drink a lot of fluids for a couple of days and go back in for bloodwork again. Same result, so this time they sent me to an endocrinologist. Lo and behold, they confirmed I had hyperparathyroidism. After years of dealing with kidney stones and unexplainable pain, insomnia, lack of focus and concentration, I finally had an answer! It took them so long to find the problem, mainly b/c this doesn't happen very often in young people, and my gland was under my breast bone, not in my neck. I had my surgery scheduled and was told I would have about a 2" incision at the base of my neck. Waking up from surgery, I was told the incision ended up having to be larger than they thought, due to the tumor being 64 times the normal size for a parathyroid gland. I now have a 5" incision scar that is barely noticable unless pointed out, and my quality of life is much improved. I still deal with my body thinking that my calcium is low and getting the numb, tingliness in my hands and face, but my levels are perfect. I just want everyone to know, if you believe something is wrong w/ your body, b/c you and you alone know what you are feeling, don't just take a doctor's word for it if you don't think it is right, get a second opinion!
