Weight gain or loss on scale

I keep trying to find the answer to this--no luck so far.

How long does it take for one day's intake (food, exercise) to be reflected on the scale. For example, is what I eat today show a change in weight, or not, when I weigh myself, say, 24 hours later? It would  be a great help with weight control to know that.

Thanks

Janet

Hi, Janet,

Maybe this will help: every 3500 calories is a pound of body weight.  For example, if you reduce your calorie intake by 3500 calories every week, you should lose 1 pound a week. I'm not advocating doing this as this might be too much to do all at once depending on your health.  I'm just giving this as an example.  Similarly, if you exercise and burn 3500 calories, you will lose 1 pound, if you keep your diet at whatever level normally maintains your weight.  But then there's water weight.  A lot of us retain a lot of water, such as people who are sensitive to carbohydrates (this might be people who have a high insulin response to sugar, such as some people with fibromyalgia).  If you significantly reduce your carb intake, you will notice a quick drop in weight.  The calorie reduction will partly determine the weight drop, but much of it will initially be water weight.  A good place to find information like this is in books by fitness professionals, especially those who have a biochemistry or physiology background.

Hi Janet,

I am no expert but I have played the weight game of life. 105 to 205 up and down again. I feel that if you look at the scales every day you are setting yourself up for defeat. I weigh myself on Friday mornings only. I have been working out and portion controling what I eat and I have almost got a flat bellie which I have never had. And when I say working it is 20 to 30 mins. a day be it dancing boot camp or anything. I am finally starting to like myself. So put the scale away because one glass of water can change your weight by up to 5 lbs. Hope  this was helpful

I have been following the 17 day diet plan to the letter and I have lost five pounds in two days.  I have been on a metabolic diet like this before and lost 35 lbs in 90 days, but the foods were boring.  I'm enjoying the recipes each day -- this doesn't feel like I diet.  I'm getting plenty to eat and I'm satisfied.
