Insomnia

Okay, a lot of you know, I'm Heather & I'm 15 years young.

I really only have trouble sleeping like half of the time. It seems like when I'm laying in bed, I can't shut my mind off. Different things just always seem to pop in my mind. And I try to think about nothing, but then I think about thinking about nothing, and it really just doesn't help. Is there anything I can do to help relax my mind. Tylenol PM helps me sleep, but I really don't want to get to the point where I am taking them all the time.

Oh & another thing. It seems to happen more when I'm not at my house. Like when I'm camping or at a hotel or a friends house.

Do you have depression /anxiety problems? Cause I have this and my mind never shuts off.I have not had a good night sleep in over 10yrs.My doctor told me to take a benadryl tablet to help me sleep. Those tylenol pills makes you feel tired when you wake up.

I can see it happening more when you are not in your home, that would seem normal to me.You might want to try a warm shower before bed and don't use the computer before going to bed.I wish I could give you a cure.So yu might want to look up some info on the internet or see a doctor.Myself,I don't like sleeping pills.

I agree with using Benadryl...much safer than tylenol PM.

Mymartinez,

Depresson, no. Anxiety, in the past.

Oddone,

I'm lactose intolerant. Lol. But I am definitely going to try relaxing every part of my body individually.

Heather, Hi!!  You should ask your doctor if it would be ok for you to try a pill (it's what your body produces to promote sleep) called melatonin. Ask the doctor what mg you should try first, if he ok's it, then it can be bought at the store. It should be taken 3o mins before bedtime, make sure the room is dark and relax. You may want to try easy listening music--like piano, or a light humming music, they also sell devices that are suppose to help promote sleep--such as a waterfall sound, birds humming, wind blowing, etc. but keep it low and dark in the room, it may help.  Also have you talked to an adult such as parents, grandparents, doctor. or someone who may try to help you with this problem??? P.S. Another idea, do not eat, drink caffiene, etc. before bedtime-at least a couple hours before bed, limit your caffiene intake-pop, tea, coffee, energy drinks, etc.  I hope these ideas might help you, please talk to an adult first.

I haven't talked to my doc yet, and I told my mom, but she doesn't seem concerned. I guess I should tell her again so she knows it wasn't just one or two times. I don't have any doctor's appointment's anytime soon. Do you think I should make one just for this or wait until I have to go again?

SleepTech

Heather,

Sorry I haven't been on in a while.  Tylenol Pm is Tylenol with Benedryl in it if you don't need the tylenol for pain then it's silly to take the tylenol as that part won't help with sleep.  Benedryl can cause you not to dream and therefore to not sleep as soundly, after a while the benedryl will not have the same effect for you either.  A warm bath aproximately 90 min before bed can help as the bath itself raises your body temperature, the drop in temperature will signal your body to sleep.  Get a sleep journal on one side of the page write down anything troubling you that you will worry about tomorrow, some people also like to jot down possible solutions on this page, on the other side jot down things you are thankful for or happy about, this can help relieve the overactive mind to help you relax and fall asleep.  Oddone's suggestion of relaxation therapy is also very helpful.  You can acheive the same effect of milk with Turkey.  Avoid Caffeine after 1pm, go to bed and get up the same time everyday (even on the weekend), a complete list of sleep hygeine tips are on my blog "Do you have problems Sleeping?"  Try these tips first, for several weeks, if you are still having difficulty do talk with your doctor and let him know you tried sleep hygeine first.  I hope that is helpful, let me know if you have more questions.
