Okay, so I am only 15. I've never been to the gynecologist, but I have my first appointment towards the end of this year. My mom told me that they check buttholes ocasionally. My sister-in-law said they didn't the first time she went.
Will they check my butthole? And if so, what is the point of it?
[I feel really awkward posting this on the internet.]

Some OBs will do a rectal exam while they're "down there". The point is to check for rectal bleeding. A smear test is done with the feces that is smeared on to the gloved finger of the doc. They usually don't do this in the younger girls because rectal bleeding is more common in older women who may have ulcers, hemorrhoids, etc. Most women do not notice blood in their stool. This test will show occult blood which is blood that can go unnoticed by women, or men. A positive test warrants further examination to determine if the blood is from hemorrhoids, ulcers, or possibly cancer.
Hey,
Just so you know there are all kinds of medical questions out there. This is the one place that most people CAN post their thoughts and questions on. Although we (well some of us anyway) aren't doctors, there are a lot of people here who are going, have gone and unfortunately may go through some of the things we post about so don't be shy.
As for your question, K answered very well :-) so I have nothing to add
Some GYN's will ask you if it's ok if they do this exam before performing this. It's also checking for abnormalities. Your GYN will tell you more. Just ask her, they are used to all sorts of questions. Don't be embarrassed, especially about posting on here, as I told a young friend, even tho we talk and share, see pictures and all- it's kind of anonymous if you think about it.
Thanks so much for your help, guys. :D
It depends on the GYN and if he/she makes it part of their exam. If the doctor does do a rectal exam, they will lubricate a gloved finger with a lubricating gel. You'll feel a slight pressure there, but that's normal. Kjones addressed your question well.
I guess I should've pointed out the fact that most women don't even feel it really. It's painless
Heather, it is really quick and painless. As everyone else on here has said, you have nothing to be shy about. Most of us are moms or sisters and we have experienced much of what you will b going through. Fortunately, you have someone to ask. There is no judgement here, just lots of kindness. Welcome to the site. Bobbie
Good call Pink. I've never heard of vaginal cysts. Rectal exams can help find vaginal abnormalities too. Never really thought about it that way. Learn something knew every day. My Gyno/OB always has that fecal smear card blood test on the counter waiting for me when I enter the exam room so I've always associated the rectal exam for the sole purpose of checking for a GI bleed.
Oh wow. I posted this a long time ago. Lol. Well, I went, and they didn't check it. Hahah. (Thank goodness.)
