With all of the recent horrific shootings, and with these types of massacres on the rise, everyone in the media and government is talking about mental health, mental health, mental health. While mental health can be a component to these shootings, I don't believe it is the only thing that sparks these events.
I fear that all this talk is going to make people MORE afraid of seeking help, for fear that they will be stigmatized, judged, and penalized. I fear that more people will not seek out the help that they need!
Just to keep things in perspective, millions of Americans are suffering from mental illness. Less than 1% of them are violent, according to someone I heard (not sure if this is factual). But what IS fact is that more violence and crime is committed against those who have mental illness--they can be easy targets and easily taken advantage of.
Back to other components that I believe cause these horrific massacres:
1. We live in a culture where most people are raised with a sense of self-entitlement. When things don't go their way, they lash out and want to hurt others.
2. We don't teach our young boys to express anger in healthy ways.
3. We live in a time where more often than not, there is dysfunction in the family.
4. Parents leave their children unattended when watching violent TV and movies, never explaining to them proper ways of dealing with anger, never explaining that violent behavior is wrong, never explaining ANYTHING.
5. Parents are not teaching their children empathy from an early age!
6. Parents are allowing their children to play hours and hours of violent video games.
7. Parents are allowing their children to use social media, which makes them less empathetic to others.
8. People are generally not making meaningful connections with others.
9. There's more! Any more ideas? Please write! Thanks.

I totally agree with you! As you do too, I also think the people are less likely to get professional help for mental illness when it is stigmatized like it has been.
Melissa.
I just thought of two more things...one is what I heard from a couple experts: When people are so isolated from others, don't have any friends or relatives to talk to and connect with, they are left with their own thoughts which could be bad ("Idle hands are the devil's workshop."), and bad thoughts can grow and grow...they have no one to vent to, no one to express their feelings to, no one to talk them into any sense...instead, they collect greivances that they perceive have happened to them throughout life.
The second thing I wanted to mention is that some people are just plain EVIL! Casey Anthony--not mentally ill--just plain evil! The case that's going on now with Jodi Arias stabbing and shooting her boyfriend out of anger and jealousy--she's not mentally ill, but she sure is evil! These mass shooters, they all have an evil streak in them. Hitler, the biggest mass murder in human history...would you call him mentally ill? No! He's absolutely PURE EVIL!!!
all the people so far that do the masacars have mental illness that are freaken crazy they need to put those people behind freaken bars and people with mental issuse need to be watched over really good and make sure that they dont have access to any harmful weapons you dont know when they are going to go off in a tangent like that i am so glad they band the assult weapons and magazines finaly they did something but it a bad out come lots of people lives were taken just because the president of the us didnt want to do anything when the colorado shooting happend what a president
I think people goes crazy because of the unhappy life which is more and more noticeable in todays society. No one is born crazy and no one deserves to end up with some mental health problems.
Just think about it, those people that killed other people, were they born with mental health? + there are more and more processed products all over us which of course creates bad effect on people, who knows what else!
But the reality is that and we must face it as such so, I am open to it as you have created in your vote pool.
Cheers
