To the Doctors: Stop claiming cow's milk reduces belly fat--it's FALSE!

To the Doctors: PLEASE LOOK AT THE LATEST RESEARCH BEFORE MAKING HEALTH CLAIMS!  Yesterday on the show, the Doctors were making a smoothie and as they poured in the milk, they said that it reduces belly fat.  The dairy industry has been sued for making these false claims that dairy aids in weight loss, and they can no longer advertise as such, according to the Federal Trade Commission.  Available research does not support these claims of weight-loss.

"The dairy industry’s weight-loss campaign was based largely on three small studies conducted by Michael Zemel, Ph.D., a professor of nutrition at the University of Tennessee whose funding came from dairy industry sources and who patented the dairy-weight-loss claim. Out of 27 randomized, controlled research trials investigating the effects of dairy products on body weight, Dr. Zemel’s were the only ones showing a link between dairy consumption and weight loss."

THE DAIRY INDUSTRY HAS BANKED ON CONSUMERS NOT TAKING AN OVERLY CLOSE LOOK AT ITS HEALTH CLAIMS!

Here's the complete article that I have referenced above:  http://pcrm.org/search/?cid=597

Here's my article that milk can do more harm than good.  At best, if you are the 20% of the population that can "tolerate" it, it's just a food like any other food.  COW'S MILK IS NOT A HEALTH FOOD, WHICH IS WHAT THEY'D LIKE YOU TO BELIEVE.

Read what the experts say on cow's milk:

Does yogurt and cheese work the same way as milk?  Do they promote weight gain/loss?

I think it's the same as milk.  It doesn't promote weight loss like we've been told.  I remember when those "Got Milk?" ads came out and it said that people who ate 3 dairy products a day lost weight, and the milk glass had an hourglass shape with a tape measure around the middle (I still see them in old magazines left in the doctor's waiting area!).  Those are the ads that they cannot run anymore because the guy who did those 3 "studies" was PAID OFF by the dairy industry!    24 other studies showed no such thing!

More recent info (by Dr. Oz and Kathy Freston, I've heard) is that nonfat and skim milk can cause weight gain if you're not too careful.  The fat has been taken out (which makes things low glycemic), so what's left is more milk sugar which can spike insulin levels (high on the glycemic index)!  Dr. Oz recommends having 2% or higher if you're going to drink milk...and Kathy Freston says drink non-dairy milk!  They're lower in calorie and have healthy fats.

Cheese and yogurt have less milk sugar (lactose) so if someone's sensitive to lactose, they'll have less bloat, and technically, the probiotics should help reduce bloating, so I can see how it won't make someone look bigger!

And of course, too much of any food can cause someone to gain weight, so I think that's how we should look at it!

Unfortunately, milk is not a superfood, try as they might :)

Thanks GreenFish ... that all makes a lot of sense.
