Plastic Surgery and the Space Age Face..."Trout Pout" etc!

I was waiting while my car was being serviced, and noticed a Vogue magazine among others, picked it up and found a very interesting article about plastic surgery.  More and more women are having "preventative" procedures in their 20s and 30s, and are ending up all looking the same, with "'unusual-looking anthropomorphic features' to something out of Village of the Damned."  This phenomena is known as the Space Age Face.  The author writes that she's sitting at...

How to never get sick, not even the flu, continued!

First of all, I wanted to say KUDOS to The Doctors, on this past Monday's show, "If It's Not the Flu, What Is It?"  They have improved from previous shows!  They stressed the importance of not taking antibiotics for the common cold, not requesting antibiotics from your doctor for willy nilly, and making sure a bacteria culture comes back positive for things like a sinus infection before the doctor prescribes antibiotics.  In my last blog about antibiotics,...

How to NEVER get sick...even the flu...what doctors don't even know or stress

There are two schools of thought when it comes to viruses and bacteria and how to fight them.  The first school of thought is that viruses and bacteria infect us and there's nothing we can do about it except wash our hands, avoid people when they are sick, and avoid touching our eyes, nose, and mouth after touching public surfaces, etc.  The second school of thought is that we have always been surrounded by viruses and...

School Shootings and Mental Health Stigma

With all of the recent horrific shootings, and with these types of massacres on the rise, everyone in the media and government is talking about mental health, mental health, mental health.  While mental health can be a component to these shootings, I don't believe it is the only thing that sparks these events.    I fear that all this talk is going to make people MORE afraid of seeking help, for fear that they will be...

Peanuts can be toxic and cause inflammation...it led to my pain!

I haven't had peanuts in years.   I had a problem with sticking to just 2 tablespoons of peanut butter, I loved it sooo much, so a few years ago I switched to almond butter, which is still tasty, but I tend to not overdo it.  It's not as tasty as peanut butter.  Plus, the fatty acid profile is better, giving you more Omega-3s.  Recently, I noticed that my favorite fruit and nut bars--Larabar--had a peanut bar, with only non-GMO peanuts,...

Listen to your body, NOT The Doctors or a particular study

Saw last week's episode about "Myth or Reality: The Drs Set the Record Straight!" (January 2, 2013).  The Doctor's "dispelled" the myth that dairy causes mucus prodution.  They stated that consuming cow's milk does not produce excess mucus.  They referred to a small study  consisting of 60 volunteers that was done a while back; I think I found the one in which they were referring:  http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/2154152.   We should all be healthy skeptics and challenge these studies.  For instance, who funded these...

To the Doctors: Stop claiming cow's milk reduces belly fat--it's FALSE!

To the Doctors: PLEASE LOOK AT THE LATEST RESEARCH BEFORE MAKING HEALTH CLAIMS!  Yesterday on the show, the Doctors were making a smoothie and as they poured in the milk, they said that it reduces belly fat.  The dairy industry has been sued for making these false claims that dairy aids in weight loss, and they can no longer advertise as such, according to the Federal Trade Commission.  Available research does not support these claims...

Milk. It does a body not-so-good. Or maybe so-so.

From Kathy Freston's book, The Lean: According to T. Colin Campbell, professor emeritus of nutritional biochemistry at Cornell University...casein, the main protein in milk, promotes cancer.  Milk protein can fertilize cancer cells! Many of us--80 percent of African Americans, 90 percent of Asian Americans, 60 percent of Latinos, and many Caucasians are, to some degree, lactose intolerant, meaning drinking animal milk or eating products made from animal products can cause us gas, pain, diarrhea, and other...

Forget the Food Pyramid--Here's the Power Plate!

A whole food*, plant-based diet can promote health and longevity, fight cancer, diabetes, and heart disease, is great for the environment, can help with weight loss, and, not surprisingly, is extremely economical (think beans, lentils, whole grains, and in-season veggies...the book Eat Vegan on $4 a Day gives some great recipes, too!).  I recently became vegan, and I have found it to be a lot of fun, and quite liberating!  I have so much energy, the last few pounds of...

Vitamin and Mineral Supplement 101 Continued! Secrets Revealed!

Last edited on October 24, 2012.  I'm revealing some lesser known things about vitamin and mineral supplements.  You should not fear taking supplements!  They are more helpful than harmful.  That being said, make sure you talk to your doctor, take appropriate blood tests if necessary, do your own research concerning supplements, and always remember, balance is key.  Do not overdo supplements...more is not always better, in fact, more can create an imbalance and can be dangerous....

Confused about Vitamins? Don't be. Here's Vitamin and Mineral 101.

(October 26, 2012 UPDATE!  The Doctor's addressed the multivitamin study just this Wednesday!  Read #11 at the bottom of this post.)  This week Dr. Travis asked the audience if vitamin supplements are good or bad for us.  He basically said that they're bad, because there was a study that showed that women who took multivitamins had an increased risk of mortality, or rather, died earlier than those who did not supplement.  The study he was referring to is...

Cranberries and blueberries WORK at fighting off a Urinary Tract Infection!

It's day 2 of my battle with bacteria, and I'm winning!  Yesterday I bombarded my system with cranberries and blueberries, both proven to prevent UTIs.  I also drank 12 cups of liquid by the end of the day.  My symptoms got worse, and I knew it had to be because of the old adage, "It gets worse before it gets better."  My pee burned so bad yesterday!  It was about a 7 out of 10,...

What Your Doctor Won't Tell You about Rxs...Part 2!

A while back, I wrote a blog about how prescription drugs can cause vitamin and mineral deficiencies.  Vitamin and mineral deficiencies can weaken your immunity and leave you susceptible to diseases.  Deficiencies may also cause headaches, anxiety, fatigue, and a whole host of other problems that leave you feeling yucky.  This is why, if you are taking medication or are going to take medication, it is very important for you to a) be aware of this, as doctors don't really...
