The Doctors 2010 Health Challenge
Like you saw on our show, my resolution this year is to complete a half-Ironman triathlon! Well … I just had my first official day of training, and boy, do I have my work cut out for me! I’ve got three months to get in shape for a 1¼ mile swim, followed by a 56 mile bike ride, topped off by a half-marathon. Sounds like a lot -- and I HAVE done this before, about three years ago -- but I was in MUCH better shape then! In fact, that's one of the reasons I’m doing this -- I’m just not in the shape that I should be in. Life has just become too busy to be as active as I like. Most of my exercise time gets “eaten up” by other things, some important, some not so much.
So, I figured if I set a really intense goal, like a half-Ironman -- AND, knowing that the cameras will be rolling -- I’ll be even more motivated to get out and train for this thing! Because it would be REALLY embarrassing to show up not ready and have all of you see me struggle to finish this race … or even worse, have to quit!
For me, the training is what is actually most important. Sure, the race itself will be fun and challenging, but the three months of training leading up to the race is really my 2010 Health Challenge! Over the next few months, I’m going to do a ton of swimming, cycling and running, and that is really going to make a difference in my health. My hope is that this will get me back into the habit of training five days a week ALL THE TIME!
Frankly, I am more than a little worried about the fat that has accumulated around my waist. At my age, if I don’t do something about this NOW, it will just keep getting worse and worse, and I’ll start suffering from all the health consequences that go along with having a “toxic waste!”
I invite you -- challenge you -- to join The Doctors 2010 Health Challenge!* Pick an event, any event -- whether it’s a 5k, 10k, a marathon, sprint triathlon or Ironman -- anything! Whatever it takes to give you some motivation to get out and train.
You will notice that it makes a HUGE difference in your activity, diet and overall lifestyle! Your breakfast table becomes your “training table,” and you start to think of what you’re eating in terms of either helping your performance or hurting it. You start to think of your down time as potential training time. Pretty soon, you’ll become obsessed with getting healthy, which is a pretty good obsession to have!
Let’s do this together! I’ll be sharing my training experiences on this blog and on my Twitter page @DrJimSears. I want to hear about what all of you decide to do for YOUR 2010 Health Challenge!*
*Before starting any exercise regimen, be sure to consult your physician.

Love the video. That is awesome - even running in the rain. Now that is motivation just hope I can get the motivation going for myself. My physical therapist told me to take it slow. Had been doing extreme incline settings on the treadmil (which I love doing) and some crazy ache in my hip threw me off.
Got away from the gym spring of '09 and the weight just creeped back. Don't know about you, but the small tire around my middle I've noticed the bp going all over the place. Doctor wants to adjust the meds, and I know if I can just drop about 20 that won't be necessary. Now I am just itching to get back to the gym. My husband renewed our membership at the rec so now I have no excuse.
I have joined The Doctor's 2010 Health Challenge and your suggestion about picking an event is great. My event or goal if you will is to loose the weight and be in great shape come spring - in time for golf (have to beat my son).
Wishing you the best Jim as you prepare for your event. Good Luck! Dawn
Hey Dr Sears, you know you can do it, it's just a matter of getting out and moving! I should be one to talk. I wanted to get to the gym today but spent time food shopping and watching the Patriots get an old fashioned butt whipping. Shame on me. Well I will get to the gym tomorrow morning and get back on track. Sometimes we need to put ourselfs first. Without us the rest of our family will suffer. Remember, YOU CAN DO IT!!

Congratulations Dr. Jim. Stellar reasons for beginning training for half-Ironman triathlon. Cute youtube video w/your wife: first day of official training
Got early start to using recumbent bike while watching THE DOCTORS M-F. (With a side of hand weights.) A struggle now since my Collie-mix, Tigger Tiggs, passed away Saturday, January 9, 2010. I'm heartsick & devastated. Hard to keep up with while Tiggs was hospitalized a week. BTW: Dr. Jim, is it FREE to put videos on youtube?
Anyway, round abouts December I kicked my living room chair to curb for a mother & son to pick up. Replaced with recumbent bike and now exercise doing my
Tour de' THE DOCTORS and/or
Tour de' DR. PHIL SHOW (Monday - Friday).
Rooting for you to complete your half-Ironman triathlon in Dallas, Texas... Go Dr. Jim! Go! YOU CAN DO IT!!!
WOW! Very brave of you. Good luck with your training.

I am doing my very first marathon this fall. I use to work in constuction and after a rather nasty fall I was unable to do much. Torn rotator cuff and bicep tendon. I am a 3rd degree Black Belt with a love for fighting. needless to say, I have not be training in my beloved sport and the results are starting to show. I needed something to challenge me the way that Martial Arts do without the shoulder pain.
I am now the proud owner of a fitness center/karate school so being out of shape just wont do. So I challenged myself to do something I HATE!!! running is the one thing I don't do.
So if or better yet WHEN I accomplish my goals my students can't tell me they can't do something.
I always say do your best and that to me is perfect!! So I am going to do my best, and hope my students are inspired by that to do their best.
I will join your challenge simply because I'm going to need all the motivation I can get.
Best of luck! by the way, you have the best laugh!! I love to hear people laughing, it always makes me laugh and I look forward to hearing yours everytime I watch the show.
Your friend,
Julia (Sensei little1)
