Well, after my CT scan, all I can say is a great big, “PHEW!” and, “WHOOHOO!” It is soooo great to get good news from the specialists. I know a lot of you have been concerned, and I thank you for your emails and well wishes. But now we all know that I have NOTHING to worry about. Yes, I do have a small blind spot in my lower peripheral visual field, but it is being caused by a funny-shaped optic nerve that I was probably born with. But it’s not being caused by a progressive illness or tumor, and I actually don’t even notice it since it’s in my peripheral vision.
It was important to get this checked out though, since common reasons for blind spots are macular degeneration, retinal detachment, or a tumor … Several viewers let us know that they had similar symptoms as mine and are making an appointment with their ophthalmologist. Dr. Chen, whom you saw on the show, said he received several calls from folks wanting to get their blind spots checked out! This is also an important reminder to get your YEARLY eye exam from your eye doctor.
Dr. Chen also told me that my particular eye problem was so rare that he was going to present my case to the ophthalmology residents at Grand Rounds. I guess that’s kinda cool that I get to be involved with teaching the eye doctors in training! More from this episode.

Wonderful news Dr. Sears!! So...you can't see the pretty ladies sneaking up on you. I'm sure you enjoy the full frontal view better. LOL! Thanks for the update. Take care.

Dr Jim
Congrats on he good news. I have been through some of those procedures before. I was diagnosed over two years ago as having degenerative myopia and then a little over a year ago as being legally blind on top of that. Let me tell you its no phone having to get out magnifiers everytime you want to read something. But I am making do.
PS I Love to watch the show!! So much cool info all the time!!
Dr. Sears,
I am so glad to hear everything turned out ok! I was worried about you because I knew there was a risk of retinal detachment. I knew because of having simillar symptoms myself and having to go immediately to get them checked out because of the fact that I was born with what is believed to be Osteogenesis Imperfecta. I too was ok, but get eye exams every 3-4 months. Anyways glad to hear it all good!
Smile and be happy!

Congrats on the good news! I just made my yearly eye exam appointment today. I am not having problems, but I always make sure I go every Spring!
Having had 4 gynecologist tell me that what was wrong with me was "all in my head" And then having ONE ENDOCRINOLOGIST, using the same test, tell me what was in my head. A pituitary tumor.
MRIs were new when I was diagnosed, or at least not as available. But the micro tumor did not show up on an MRI. But they saw an indentation in the OPTIC NERVE.
I know that you had that exam that showed the damage, but it was done from within the optic nerve. Why not an MRI to see the outside of the eye where the connection is?
You may be content with the outcome, but when 1 in 5 have pituitary tumors, I would see an Endocrinologist.
The majority of these tumors are found in cadavers. They didn't die of them......they never knew that they had one.
Rarely are these tumors cancerous and they are slow growing. But they can raise some serious crazy havoc.
So I think that you need a third follow-up

Thanks katieb3...found him. Did you know that if you do a search on Dr Sears....you get his parents.
I love the show and I am so happy that you are alright, Dr. Sears.
Glad the news was good, but if I were you I would see a retinologist as they specialize in all the quirks that go with your problem; who knows maybe it can be corrected.
Now what I really want to know is why they always use you as their guenea pig?
Dr Jim I was so relieved to see the show saying you were going to be OK.I was sooo worried about you.
Now I am extra worried and scard about myself, about a year ago I had flashes like lightening and I did see a Dr and he said to come back in about a year to see if it healed up. I still get a flash once in a while, so I guess it isn't all healed yet.
I go to see a Dr at the end of April about a thing on my face, so after that I will pick up the nerve to go see about my eyes. Thanks for the program, it is great, and helpfull. Eunice
Dr. Sears,
I love watching you on the show! You are so genuinely interested and compassionate about your topics!
It was refreshing to read your blog and see you see kids away from the office or after hours. There are still a Few Food Men!
I am so glad to hear your scan proved to be nothing too serious! You have been in my prayers. It is so agonizing to have a brain scan and wonder for the days prior what they will find!

Hi Dr. Sears,
I have similar symptoms as yours and have spent the last 7 months trying to find answers. I have peripheral vision loss in the left eye, lower left quadrant, so much so, if I were sitting in the passenger seat of my car, looking straight ahead, I could see the trees pass by on the right side of the car, but not see my husband driving in the seat to the left of me. I have to turn my head to see anything on the left.
I have stage 4 cancer, diagnosed Feb 08 and this vision loss presented in the summer of 08, I can't exactly say when it happened because it is periperal vision and you don't always notice it (if that makes sense). My brother is a pharmacist and he researched my drugs but nothing there. I've had CTs and MRIs, been to a neurologist and an opthamologist twice, visual field tests. I've exhausted every avenue close to me. My next step is to get a referral to an opthamologist who specializes in oncology, which would be in Toronto, and I live in Newfoundland.
My concern and worry is that this is happening at the same time as my cancer. Is it just a coincidence? I know it has to be optic nerve because only one eye is involved, and because it's periperal vision.

Hi Dr. Sears,
So glad to hear your eye exam was OK. I saw the show but haven't had time to tell you that! After cradling the phone on my shoulder, I also lost sight in a big spot on one eye for 2 and 1/2 weeks! They did a doppler of my neck and discovered a natural narrowing of the carotid artery. The ultrasound tech theorized that I got a blood pool which rushed up my face, after I lifted my head up. I've had migraines every month, for years, but now I know that caused the problem. My opthamologist doubted that narrowing would cause the blind spot; but if I keep my head straight up on the phone, I don't get the migraines or spots anymore- - unless I wake up after sleeping with my head cocked to one side. I've been about 7 years completely migraine free since that doppler. I'm sure they probably checked your carotid artery too, but in case this helps you I send my story along.
Thanks for all your good information! My kids are grown, but I hang on your every word for my grandchildren (3 of them)!
If you have a chance, please post the safe recycling codes for food storage. You said it on the show, and I knew I should have noted it at that time. I couldn't find it on the archives.
