Hello Everyone!
We mentioned cankles on the show the today and I thought both the term and the procedure could use some further explanation. We plastic surgeons have been doing liposuction on just about all parts of the body since the late seventies.
During those years, the surgery has gone through many incarnations, and it's gotten better and better. Now we use smaller and smaller instruments that create less trauma and less recovery time. These smaller and more precise, low-impact instruments allow us to go after the smaller and denser pockets of fat on the calves and ankles (cankles). But getting the fat out is just part of the regimen. We elevate the patients’ legs for 24-hours and apply compressive pump stockings that help to milk the swelling away. It's state of the art! More from this episode.

Dear Dr. Ordon, Thanks to you and The Doctors for the segment on "cankles". I did not realize it had a name ... or that there was any solution. Just like Natalie, I have hidden in shame behind pants most of my adult life. Having been taught at a very young age to dislike my body, it has been difficult. I distinctly recall my mother specifically making note of my large ankles and how unfortunate that I did not have her or my sisters pretty legs. At age 52, not only are the "cankles" inherintly a problem, but add to that aging weight problems and an ankle injury years ago.........I now simply cannot bear the thought of wearing anything other than pants. However, I did not realize (until your show) just how emotionally affected I really am. When I heard what you were going to talk about I was glued to the TV. As the segment progressed, the tears started flowing. Even now, when I think of the beautiful gift you gave to Natalie I well up in tears. There really is hope for people like me. Could you please share with us if there is anything - aside from surgery - that can help reduce the size and help define the ankles? I suspect that such a surgery is extremely expensive and not covered by any insurance. Are there exercises of some type that we can do? I have hoped all my life to hear of something I could do that would help. The thought of being able to actually wear a dress or shorts again....... without excrutiating shame...............is absolutely unimaginable. Please......... are there other solutions?
