Deviated Septum procedure

Hello Fellow Bloggers.

We just did a show that included a very pretty lady with breathing problems.  As is always the case, there is a lot of information and important points that don't make it on the air due to time constraints.  I love doing this show because I learn so much from my fellow doctors, but sometimes I wish I could say or show more about things in my "wheelhouse" like noses.

Cherie’s case was typical in the fact that she needed cosmetic and functional work.  Just about every nose I do includes both.  Some folks show up with concerns about the tip size, a bump on the nose, crookedness, etc. - but when I take a speculum and look inside I say, "Whoa!  How do you even breathe with all this pathology inside the nose???"

So we need to do something both cosmetic and functional.  Other times, someone comes to me with a purely functional concern.  I do have board certification in Plastic Surgery and Ear Nose and Throat (ENT), so I get this sort of thing all the time. Close to 90% of those patients end up saying: "As long as you're in there..."  Once again, we end up doing a little cosmetic with the functional.

I sometimes compare it to building a beautiful house.  It can be as fancy as you wish, but unless it's on a good foundation and has proper construction, it will fail.  Noses are like that, so I build them from the bottom-up.  My goal?  A natural, beautiful nose that looks like it was the one my patient was born with.  And a good airway and function so my patient can enjoy exercise, peaceful sleep and an improved life.  As it should be.

Well, I have one ugly nose so I'd be happy to have a functional problem and get a little cosmetic along with it!  Hehe.  Maybe I should get mine checked out.  ;)

I have a deviated septum also but have been terrified to get it fixed one because of my other med problems 2 because of that hammer thing OMG the banging gives me the shivers. I can only breath out of one side of my nose, and if I get a cold, forget about it. then my asthma kicks in then the dizzies and vertigo go into hyperdrive. Hopefully one day i wil get it fixed so i know how it is to breaath normally.

Hi Doctor Orden !

Recently this TV program started airing in Dubai where I am currently staying & I must say it is one of the best informative shows I have seen. All of you are really good !

I too am suffreing with almost total blocked breathing when i turn on to my right side during sleep which either wakes me up gasping or makes me sleep through the night sleeping always on my left side. This has made my left side of the body very tired besides my left upper eye lid shows some signs of wrinkles, which are not visible there on my right eye lid. I am 53, and this blockage started somewhere around 15 years ago. Before that I had no such problem. When i look up my nose, I can see distinct dissimilarities in my nostrils due to bending of my septum perhaps ?  dont know. I am otherwise healthy.

I am too scared of any procedures, and so i did not visit any doctor till now. Can you tell me how severe is this surgery (if You think I am also suffering with deviation of septum) ? And can you recommend any doctor in Dubai , if you know any, who will be safe to handle this procedure ? I will be indebted to you forever if you can advice me on this.

Hi Doctor ,

I just love the show. Can you tell me exactly what is meant by "Deviated Septum"  and what causes one?

Hello Dr. Ordon,

I always wondered about what my friend really meant when she said she had a deviated septum. I remember having a music concert (I play the clarinet) the week she had her surgery and she couldn't play her saxophone because of it. This episode was very informative and I just love watching you perform. You are no doubt my favorite doctor on this show. :)  Considering I'm only 14 and aspiring to be a doctor, I just love to learn about these things. You are my role model and hopefully I'll be as good as you someday. This was a great episode.

Hi Dr. Ordon,

I saw an ENT this week. He did say I have a deviated septum, but he did not think it was causing my headaches.  However, so did my friend.  She had the surgery and boom...her headaches were gone!!  It's interesting how when I have gotten I.V. Benadryl and something like Demerol or Phenergan all combined, I do well.  I can breathe and my pain is gone until it wears off.  Do you think it's worth a second opinion?  I live in Sinus Valley, Ohio....  Dayton and everyone, including my PCM said it was the fluctuating barometric pressure there.  ???

Anyway, I can't take it anymore.  I am going nuts and these headaches are putting me in bed.  Plus, how do I describe this....the other day I was sitting in the dark and them someone came in and turned on the light and I saw little shooting dots in my visual field.  I have had Toxoplasmosis...so, hmmmm....

Take Care...

Thanks.
