I am continually disappointed in the misinformation and uninformed “medical” advice given by the supposedly highly regarded Doctors on this program. As parent of a type 1 diabetic child, I was outraged by Dr. Sears comment on the show (Sept 24th) to the school children in the segment about eating a healthy school lunch. The doctor warned the children in the audience against eating sugar, telling them if they do they will get diabetes and have to take shots for the rest of their lives.
This is an ignorant and offensive comment to the thousands of type 1 diabetic children and their families. The majority of young children who have diabetes are type 1. Type 1 Diabetes is an autoimmune disease where a person’s own antibodies attack and damage their pancreas. This disease is not caused by poor eating habits and my child did not get diabetes by eating junk food. A real doctor also knows that type 2 diabetes has a much more complicated cause than “eating sugar”. Dr. Sears comments were inflammatory and accomplished no benefit.
If the doctor in this segment knew how many times diabetic children have to endure ignorant comments about how they must have eaten too much sugar or in some other way caused their own disease, he would issue an apology for his hurtful statement. The doctors on this program should be addressing medical misinformation and myths by educating the public rather than encouraging ignorance and discrimination. I am thoroughly disappointed in the level of medical knowledge shown by Dr. Sears in this segment.

I couldnt agree more, but be careful what you type, I have typed many messages on the message boards that have been deleted by the mods, and not one has been an offensive, inflammatory, icky post, its been sharing information, hasnt been offensive o obscene, or even argumentative, but they sure do not like anyone speaking out, no matter how maturely you do it like your post, if it has anything to do with disagreeing with them, your information disappeas.
I think its terrible that they do that, makes me wonder what else is so edited here, this is a show where people are supposed to TUST doctos with their health information, so why would they do things to make people DISTRUST them by deleting posts that are intelligent debates?
Thank you for sharing your post! I agree with you, its ignorant comments like that, that unfortuneately people who are not directly affected by diabetes (or other diseases) would take as the truth, ya know?

You are right as rain and you are also going to be deleted. I just hope many people read this before it happens. The person who has their hand firmly over the delete key must have the day off. It's a shame. It would be different if you were blasting a doctor for no good reason and treating him unfairly, but what you posted is absolute fact. It IS NOT DEBATABLE. IT IS TRUE.
I agree with what you've said. There is quite a bit of misinformation/glossing over. I think, in part, it has to do with the doctors "dumbing down" their language so people can understand better. And extremes/exaggeration always work best when it comes to examples. The problem is, people take the doctors at their word, rather than looking into it themselves, or doing proper research, or talking to their own doctors about their concerns.
There was something DrMasterson said about epidurals that pissed me right off--oh yeah, she said they don't harm the baby. Partially true, there is no real harm to the baby BUT it is a narcotic, just a slower release than morphine or demerol. The problems that babies DO experience relatively often is that they lose their suck ability and have problems breast feeding after birth. Not permanently, but there is an effect.
Phew, that was a bit of a babble for me just wanting to say that I agree with you!! :)
Is there any Board Certified Doctors out there???????
I totaly agree with you on this one. Diabetes is also hereditary and may skip generations and then show up in one family memeber, there is such thing as onset Diabetes and that is were the type of foods you eat can affect you down the road due to the insaline that your body can either make to much or not enough and onset is due to weight but I do agree with what you are saying, its like telling people that its their fault when its not ,our bodies basically do what mother nature intends them to do and is out of our control until diagnosed.
