I have gone through many tests at Kansas University to qualify as a recipient of a new liver.  It is the same battery of tests that anyone with any cause of liver failure must go through.  Those who have previously abused their liver with alcohol or drugs must also have documentation that they are clean and sober for a min. of 6 mos. prior to a transplant, attend AA weekly, be tested when called for transplant and pass.  If they fail, they must go thru a 6 mo. program and present documentation that they have completed the program.  If not, they are canceled from the transplant program.  I have one more hoop to jump through before the transplant team presents my case and either accepts me into the program or pats me on the back and says bye-bye. 

Those of us who are facing this surgery must also deal with such things as the death of another person to save our lives.  This is a precious gift and one I would never deny to another sincere person who has gone through so much to have another chance at life.
