Sneaking Up on Sixty

I’d love to start a forum for those of us who are “more mature”. I’ll be 59 in May. Once you’re “deeply invested” in menopause, your needs are different from those of younger women. If love this forum to address:

*Tips for navigating through menopause gracefully

*FUN exercise ideas for those of us with serious back issues or other creaky body parts

*Yummy, healthy recipes

*Supplements, procedures, and any other affordable “help” we can do so that our outsides match our insides

*Lunch Date: Accountability to one another for weight loss; if you’re like me, you like to eat out with the girls and that can KILL a diet. Let’s all do lunch together on Tuesdays and encourage one another and share tips!

Want to join me? I hope so! I want this group to consist of women in the exact same place I am! We can find out what sixty can look and feel like and enter this new decate with some style!!!

Hi Sneaking,  I agree.  I am 56 and in the same boat as you.  I have back trouble too and normally have trouble walking for long periods of time, however, I got a treadmill recently and have found that I can walk on it without my back hurting.  I can only do 20 minutes right now but hope to work my way up.  I've been on the diet since Sunday and have lost 6 lbs.  I hope I can do this!  Good-luck to you!

Wow! You are doing way better than I am. I'm on Day 11 and have lost 4 1/2 pounds. I am walking my dog each morning for about 40 minutes, but it's lots of stopping. I feel like quitting this diet since I've lost more weight, more quickly on my own. But not as healthfully. I keep telling myself that if I DO quit, a bag of Sunchips is in my future and that I'm just looking for excuses to eat them. So, for now, I'm still on the wagon. Hope to hear more about your journey!

Hi Sneaking, have you checked out the "old farts" message board?  I think it's under the Team Dr. Phil boards.  Come join us there!

It's got to be  that treadmills have enough "give" that they don't bother weak backs as easily. That means committing to a health club or buying one. Anyone know of any good deals out there?

Hi BellaBear Girl,  Don't give up!  I really think this diet is to teach us to make better choices in order to not be hungry... I am trying to tell myself to eat to live and not live to eat.  It is hard to give up all the fattening things I've always eaten but I try to remember this food is better for me... and actually makes you stay full longer.  Good luck!

Ah, I needed that reminder, Chicks. I remember Dr. Phil saying, once that we should eat to live, not live to eat. Reminds us of how much of our "hunger" is really emotion -- boredom, stress, depression, elation, etc. And that we need to ask ourselves as we're about to eat something when it's not meal time " What am I feeling right no?" because the cookie will taste good for the 20 seconds it takes to eat it and then we'll be left with feelings of failure and disgust for eating it AND the same emotions that were present -- and still unresolved -- before we popped that cookie in our mouths!

to bellabeargirl, i found my treadmill on craigslist.  i got a really good deal... it was only a year old... hardly used... and i paid about 1/2 the price it was in the store new.  i am very happy with it.  it is a nordictrack.  i highly recommend it... it has a cushioning system that helps with impact.  i still hate exercise but love the results and my daughter and I are doing the diet together and taking turns on the treadmill and encouraging one another.  watching tv when we walk helps to pass the time and take your mind off the old joints hurting...i've found that after the first 15 minutes of getting warmed up on it that it seems like the time after that is not as hard.  i have worked my way up to walking 25 minutes/5 times a week.  good luck!

Thanks Chicks! There are also core muscle exercises you can find online for people with back pain. I'm going to check out Craigs List in my area.
