Anti-Depressents? Im scared!

Hi there everyone. For the past few years I know and feel like I have not been myself. Who knows, it could even be longer for all I know. Anyway, to make this long story short, just recently, I didnt feel like going to work, I didnt feel like doing anything, besides being sick, I made a Dr's appointment and he prescibed Celexa to me 10 mg a day. I've just been staring at it. Im scared to start this medication. How about vitamins? I'm feeling better, but I know that I will feel down again if I dont start taking this celxa. Any advice?

IMO it's worth a shot to try if you are feeling the way you do...cant do any harm (although you may have side effects  AT FIRST).  You may be surprised.  Good luck.

You should take the medication.  I recently heard a psychologist talking about this, and he compaired it to taking insulin. Think of it this way.... If a doctor diagnosed you as diabetic and told you you had to take Insulin everyday you would do it right? Well this is the same thing, you are depressed which is a medical condition and you need to take medication to treat it.  It's no different than taking insulin to treat diabetes.

At the same time I know how you feel.  I recently was started on Amytriptyline which is an antidepressant for pain and it scared me a bit at first but I talked to my medical student ( I was in the hospital at the time) and he was really helpful.  He said that its no different than any of my other medications and that a lot of my other medications worked with my brain too in some form.  This helped a lot.

I hope this helps.

Thank you ladies. I know my mom yelled at me for not trying them and my friends are like just take them. I'm sooo afraid of the side effects. The diabetic example really makes sense. If they dont work, I guess I can just ween myself off (that's scares me too). It just seems like I should take vitamins to see if they help and then if not then do the celexa. I will keep you posted. Thank you for sharing!!

IF YOU ARE FEELING BAD, AND DEPRESSED THEN YOU SHOULD TAKE THIS MEDICATION THAT THE DOCTOR HAVE GIVEN. BUT REMEMBER TO TAKE A LOW DOSE AND IF THAT WORKS FOR YOU THEN STAY AT THAT PACE. HOPE YOU FEEL BETTER AND STAY STRONG

I have been anti-depressants since 2005. I have tried several different kinds. Now I am taking Celexa 40 mg. The anti-depressant helps me out with my mood swings and other emotions. Just keep taking your anti-depressant if you don't you will definitely feel down again. I know because in bewteen taking meds I had anxiety, crying and my mood swings were awful. I didn't realize I was depressed until I met my husband and he told me to go the doctors. Anti-depressants aren't for everyone. You could try walking or playing with a pet.

I personally think doctors overlook so many things when they diagnose depression. To me depression is a side affect. Something cause it.  I would see a nutritionist & see if your diet needs a tune up before I would start the pills. My daughter was put on anti dressants over a year ago & they still haven't found the right combination that works for her. All along I wanted her checked out for medical problems but nobody would listen to me. She is 18 now & I have no say in any of her treatment. She has been in a mental hospital 3 times in the last 3 months. She hasn't been checked for low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), nutritional deficiencies(she does not eat good foods at all) or any other thing that can cause depression. Now her doctors feel she has an attention seeking personality disorder. Does a pill work on that??? I would think behavior therapy would be the answer.

DEPRESSION HURTS!  You need to talk with your doctor!   There are a lot of very good medicines out there now, so be honest with your doctor and let him know how you feel.  Keep searching for the light, come here and get it out.  It is amazing how getting outside and breathing fresh air helps.  Please, please, please don't run and hide or avoid,

I really don't know much about that medication but, if you are depressed it really can't hurt if it doesn't work you can talk to your Dr. and maybe try something else. I'm on Paxil and and another one since my son passed away. I really didn't want to start the second med but, I was having terrible panic attacks and it does help. It's not a bad thing to take anti depressent meds if it helps it will make your life much easier.

They are scarey. Just when you find the right combination of anti-depressants, another doctor comes along and changes them. The side affects are horrible, sometimes wose than the meds. If you fiind the right meds, don't let anyone change that without total trust. Big Pharma is not on your side! They want to make money just like all the rest. I hope I don't get in trouble for saying this... but, I had no idea that  a person could be "involuntarily committed" for asking for help. I didn't know that you can be put in "detox" without your own consent. I didn't know I had a drug problem, since I was taking what was prescribed. The war of drugs has turned into a war on doctors too! if you go to the dentist, they might give you some pain relief, but when a hospital finds an opiate in your systen,,,, that does NOT necessarily mean that you are an abuser! Just try getting old and having bone loss in your mouth and other parts of your body, and see if you can take the pain!
